Supermarket Sweep……Maybe Not!!!
“The other thing I am finding increasingly frustrating, despite the enormous rise in excise duty on wine, is you can still go in to a supermarket and get a bottle of wine for practically nothing!
This really, genuinely is not going to happen in the future- because everyone is now looking at the price of oil, the price of transport and so on and so forth. So it is going to cost a lot more to get these wines from these countries of origin, ‘drinkable wines’ I mean into the supermarkets.
The supermarkets will no longer be able to rely on screwing down the suppliers, so what eventually is going to happen is that supermarkets are not going to be able to make the same margin out of their wines as they always expect too, they will not be able to yield their shelf space which is basically what they are all about, so they will start stocking fewer wines! |
