Having recently returned from a trip to Portugal to visit the vineyards of Ramos Pintos in the upper Douro, my taste buds have received a welcome reminder of the depth, complexity and variety of our best loved fortified drink.
Made in a defined area of the upper Douro it is a wine made from a blend of red and white grapes. Traditionally the grapes were crushed by foot in a stone trough called a Lagar (we actually did this so be very wary of the 2007 vintage! Only joking) but more often than not this is done mechanically. |
